The Lanzi Story

When we were seven years old, we started helping out: mopping floors, peeling potatoes, washing dishes," says Lou Lanzi. "My parents always said, 'A little work will never hurt you.'

That simple approach has carried four generations of Lanzi's to success in the restaurant business. And nowhere can you see the success more clearly than at Lanzi's on the Lake.

"Everything's Homemade" including the family's own salad dressing. "We've had it since 1957," Chris Lanzi, executive chef, explains. "My father had just opened up Lorenzo's, and he wanted something unique to draw people in. My brother Lou first made up the dressing; my father tasted it and said, 'Geez, it has potential.' It's kind of a creamy Italian, but we threw a few other things into it, and there's really not another one like it." Salad devotees can buy bottles of the special dressing, not only at our restaurants, but also at Chatterbox in Amsterdam - owned, naturally, by two Lanzi sisters.

The reward for such outstanding cuisine comes from the patrons. "I get tons of comments," says Lou. "Just last Friday, we served people from New York City that have a camp near here. His job is entertaining clients in Manhattan, so he goes to all the best restaurants. He told us our food was as good, if not better, than any restaurant in Manhattan. That was quite a compliment."

Creating all this success began with the ingredient that carries it to this day: hard work. "When our grandfather came over from Rome, he worked on the railroad and in the carpet mills," Lou recounts. "He worked two jobs because he wanted to own his own business." In about three years, he realized that dream by buying a small store. From that humble start, he eventually owned a Prohibition-era speakeasy and Amsterdam's only banquet house complete with professional boxing in the back room.

Growing up in those circumstances was Lorenzo, who learned the trade at his father's restaurants and shared his entrepreneurial spirit. "In the '50s, Dad wanted to get out on his own," Lou says, "so he broke away and opened his own restaurant" - the same Lorenzo's that delighted Amsterdam patrons for years. True to his upbringing, Lorenzo set his own nine children to work in the new restaurant. The result? His five sons: Lou, Chris, Tony, Joe and Larry now operate Lanzi's on the Lake, Sport Island Pub, Partner's Pub,and Lakeside Tavern and marina - not to mention a flourishing off-premises catering business.

And then there's the work of passing on the business to the next generation - a process that, according to Lou, is already beginning. "When my son was eight - he put the apron on, wrote the specials down, took water to the tables, and set up. He's very serious about it. One day, 'Dad, how old do you have to be in order to be a busboy?' I said, 'Thirteen.' He said, 'Darn it!"'

Not to worry. His day will come - because the Lanzi legacy should continue pleasing patrons for generations!

I've been to Lanzi's both as a dinner guest and to host wedding receptions.

" Such a super spot with great flexibility and nice folks to work with. It helps the food is out-flippin'-standing too! Last weekend's dinner was delish and I cannot wait to come back on Aug. 22 for another great wedding. Nice folks with a smile at Lanzi's indeed. :-)"

Such a gorgeous view!

"Ben and I had dinner on the deck last night. Food was awesome and a terrific wine list. Such a gorgeous view! We love it here on full moon nights. We sit and enjoy as long as we like. The staff is very accommodating and you can always count on a friendly greeting from a real Lanzi!"

We recommend Lanzi's for a wedding

"My wife and I had our wedding hosted by Chris Lanzi, and could not be happier. Chris took care of all of our concerns and left us to enjoy the most special day of our lives. We recommend Lanzi's for a wedding to anyone who wants high class taste at an affordable bottom line. "

Best Restaurant Around!!

"Lanzi's is simply a must try! The food is exquisite with options to satisfy any taste buds and the portions are plenty big to make sure you're full and often have leftovers. The indoor and outdoor seating is beautiful boasting you views of the Sacandaga Lake as you sit 60feet from the waters edge. Marina with docks to arrive by boat in the summer for the ultimate dining experience in the area! It can be busy on summer weekends, call ahead on weekends for a reservation. Huge capacity though, so a big crowd doesn't take much for Lanzi's to handle. The staff were friendly and attentive on all of my visits and the owner Lou Lanzi is someone you will most likely meet during your visit. He is a wonderful man who adds to the overall experience! "

The best place to eat in all of upstate NY!!

"I have thoroughly enjoyed every meal that I have ever eaten here. My wife and I try to come here at least once a month!! Beautiful restaurant inside and out. The outside deck overlooks the Sacandaga and in those cold winter months, the interior is very inviting with a nice warm fireplace on the right wall. Wait staff is always friendly and takes care of you. Now for the food!! Even the breads ticks and salad are way above average. The house dressing is out of this world and you can buy it by the bottle when you leave as well!! For appetizers, the chicken wings are extremely good and the shrimp cocktail, even though a little pricey is very good. The shrimp are so big it feels like you are eating a lobster tail or something. My favorite meal by far is the NY Strip steak. I have it cooked medium and it is always done perfectly!! The seasonings are perfect as well. Usually after the salad and breads ticks I can only finish half but the other half will be just as good the next day!! The filet mignon is the most tender piece of meat you could ever ask for. Very soft, you can cut it with your fork. I enjoyed it but it lacked the seasoning of the NY strip, that is of course just my opinion but if the filey just had a little more spice I think it would have been out of this world. The lobster ravioli are also a top pick for me. It doesn't look like much when you are served but these homemade ravioli are so packed of lobster you do have trouble finishing off the plate. Lanzi's also has one of the best prime ribs that you will ever taste!! You will not be sorry here no matter what you order!! "
